1. Understand Differentiating Capabilities

Competitor analysis helps Shopify store owners understand how their operations compare to other eCommerce businesses' operations. You can collect data on your:
  • Competitors’ revenue
  • Marketing strategies
  • Sales approaches
  • Product offerings
To identify areas where you can improve. The more you learn about what your competitors do well, the more you can inform your business strategy to improve performance and differentiate your Shopify store.

2. Develop a More Effective and Strategic Sales Approach

A revenue checker can help you identify troubling sales trends, such as what happens to your eCommerce store’s sales when a competitor runs a promotion. Understanding these patterns can help you develop a more effective and strategic sales approach to combat negative effects.
Suppose you learn that your competition is doing well in offering high-quality products. In that case, you can train your sales staff to educate new leads on your company’s position on quality control while showing the results to prove that your products can provide high-quality solutions even better than the competition.

3. Increase Revenue

When you conduct regular competitor analysis, you change your organization’s internal operations to stay in tune with market trends and customer needs. This makes your brand known to customers as authentic, reliable, and customer-centric because you will have mastered the parameters that attract customers most. Even so, you should not concentrate too much on what the competition is doing to the extent that you lose your uniqueness and focus.
You should utilize the results from the competitor analyses to improve what you already have on one or more of the researched differentiating aspects of price, quality, or customer service. This practice will enable you to attract and retain more customers, leading to higher sales revenues. With global Retail eCommerce sales projected to reach $6.38 trillion by 2024, now is the time to take strategic action to become better than your competitors.

4. Discover Gaps in the Market

By studying your competitors, you can identify areas they neglect or services they do not offer. These gaps in the market represent potential opportunities for your business. For example, if you discover that many competitors do not provide fast shipping, you could fill that gap by offering a fast and efficient delivery service.

5. Improve Your Products and Services

Knowing your competitors' products and services can help you enhance your own. You may discover additional features or services that your competitors offer and consider whether it would benefit your business to do the same. You may find that your competitors are falling short in certain aspects, allowing you to stand out by overcoming these weaknesses in your business.

Real-Time Ecommerce Data: The Need for Speed

Customer data is always changing, and the numbers you received yesterday may be irrelevant today. Collecting real-time data as it rolls in ensures your team always has the most accurate picture of your customers’ brand interactions. This always-fresh first-party data helps you understand what your customers are doing right now, so you can immediately change your marketing plans.
Let’s say your platform shows a sudden increase in website traffic from a particular social media site. You quickly adjust your ad spending to take advantage of this trend and reach more people before losing momentum. Without real-time data, you might miss this trend and lose out on potential gains.

Customer Behavior Tracking: Who’s Buying What?

Customers are creatures of habit with unique purchasing patterns. Understanding what they add to their online shopping cart and where they buy is necessary to level up your marketing game and boost customer lifetime value. Ecommerce analytics tools do more than track the types of products your customers buy. They also reveal insights into customer preferences like their most-used channels (e.g., in-store, online, or SMS).
By knowing where and how your customers engage with your brand, you can refine your digital marketing strategies to target the most effective channels and avoid approaches that don’t work. Using ecommerce analytics and AI to understand which channels customers prefer These tools also help identify larger purchasing patterns and trends. For example, as a clothing retailer, you might see a shift from festival clothing to swimwear as spring turns to summer. This insight allows you to adjust your inventory and provide a personalized customer experience, increasing satisfaction rates by at least 20%.

Sales Performance Analysis: Predicting the Future

Introducing new products and managing existing stock can be challenging. In the past, ecommerce businesses didn’t have tools to help them predict what would sell or how much to keep in stock, so they mostly relied on guesswork. This made it hard to avoid running out of popular items or having too much stuff.
Customer analytics tools make these issues a thing of the past. They offer the sales performance analysis needed to identify top-performing products, understand sales trends, and forecast how well these products will perform. With this data at your fingertips, you’ll no longer have to guess whether a new product variation will succeed or risk ending up with too much or too little stock by the end of the season.

Customizable Dashboards: Making Sense of the Numbers

Ecommerce analytics tools spit out a lot of data. To make sense of it all, you need a dashboard that’s easy to understand. Look for providers offering user-friendly dashboards that present data without overwhelming your team with complex numbers.
Some providers offer dashboards that are easy to understand and require no advanced coding or technical knowledge. This helps your whole team break down information silos and understand how your brand is doing. This addresses a common issue many marketers face, and only 23% strongly agree that they have the quality audience data needed to make the most of their budgets.

Leverage Shopify’s Built-In Tools to Analyze Your Competitors

You can use the Shopify platform in three specific ways to research your competitors.

1. Find Out Who Your Competition Is

Shopify Store Revenue Checker
Shopify Store Revenue Checker
Need help determining which Shopify shops are competitors? Well, that’s easy to find out. Search Google for: site:myshopify.com “keyword” and see what comes up. This doesn’t always work since Shopify lets people use their custom domain, which replaces the “myshopify” part for their shop’s URL. And the truth? It’s usually only dropshipping stores that leave the “myshopify” part in their URL. Don’t worry; there are some ways around this: Look for the word “collection” in a potential Shopify competitor’s URL.
Use the Wappalyzer browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera to determine which ecommerce platform your competitor uses. Insert a keyword into the Xpareto tool and see the top Shopify shops related to that keyword. Browse the list of all Shopify stores ranked by traffic on the Myip.ms website.

2. Find Out How Much Your Competition Is Selling

Once you find a Shopify competitor you want to spy on, follow these tried-and-true steps to see how popular they are:
  • Buy one of the cheapest items from their online shop on the first day of the month and get the order number (you can find this on the last page of the checkout process and in the Shopify order confirmation email).
  • On the last day of the month, buy that same cheap item using an alias and get that order number.
  • Find the difference between the order numbers (since Shopify assigns sequential order numbers to orders, doing this will tell you how many items were purchased throughout the month).
To estimate your competitor's revenue, you can use your average order value multiplied by the order volume you found from going through the three steps above. Once you find out who is pulling your customers away from you, you can dig deeper to discover how they’re succeeding, turn the tables on them, and become their biggest competition.

3. Find The “Diamond SKU”

Every Shopify shop has a “diamond SKU.” Have you never heard of it? You should listen closely because this is a big secret you’ll want to know about. A diamond SKU is a top-selling Shopify product not sold on Amazon. That’s because Shopify owners don’t want to sell their best-selling products on Amazon for everyone to see.
Everyone knows how to monitor the competition on Amazon. If you don’t want people to see which products are your top sellers, you’ll hide that product and only sell it on your Shopify shop. But we know how to find the diamond SKU on a Shopify shop. Add collections/all?sort_by=best-selling to the end of any Shopify URL and look it up. For instance, in the tennis shoe example, You might enter https://kswiss-us.myshopify.com/collections/all?sort_by=best-selling into my browser and see the following results.

Leveraging Competitor Insights for Shopify Success

This “secret” page will show me which products are the best sellers in this Shopify shop or category and how much they charge for each item. You can then capitalize on this newfound information in a few ways: If you sell the same product, You can offer it on Amazon (since this seller likely doesn’t because it’s a diamond SKU) and make a killing. You can replicate this competitor's strategies on their Shopify site to promote top-selling products similar to those on your site with a unique point of difference.
For example, Shopify recommends using a direct call to action to get people to buy, using unique images highlighting how your product is better or different from the rest. You should also use more detailed product descriptions anytime you use this strategy so customers know what they’re spending their money on, like the Bombas socks pictured below. Gather ideas about new products you might want to develop and sell. Most Shopify sellers don’t realize their shops are exposed like this and that this crucial information is available for anyone to see. But now you know. And now you can make the most of this hidden strategy.

Monitor Your Competition’s Online Mentions with Mention

Mention is a real-time web and social media monitoring solution that will alert you anytime you or your brand is mentioned across the web or in social media. But the secret here is that you can also use Mention to track your competition. Create competitive analysis alerts to do the following:
  • Monitor how your competition engages with your target audience.
  • Find out how they’re building links and relationships with customers and influencers.
  • See what customers are complaining about or what they like, and offer more of what they want.
  • Discover new influencers in your industry and reach out to them to build lasting relationships. This will help expose your brand to a bigger audience and increase sales.
  • Track the location of all mentions to determine the geographic location of customers that should be yours.
You should always contact anyone mentioning your competition. You should befriend your competition’s friends. Offer them better solutions, encourage them to check you out, and try to get them on board with what you have to offer instead of what my competition offers. That way, they become interested in your brand and switch from your competition to theirs.

Using Free Tools to Uncover Competitor Sales Strategies

If you don’t want to use Mention (since it is a premium service), you can use Google or even Twitter to get similar results. Just Google your competitor’s name and exclude search terms like their Shopify website. Want to find out other places my competitor sells in addition to their Shopify site?
To refine your search efforts, you’ll add exclusion terms to eliminate results like your competitor’s blog, help and contact pages, etc. By doing this, you’ll learn about other platforms my competition is selling on besides Shopify, discounts they’re offering their customers, and ways they promote their products so you can do the same (and more!) to take business away from them and generate more sales of my own.
Ahrefs is a suite of online tools designed to help you boost your site’s traffic, research your competitors, conduct ecommerce backlink research, and monitor your niche for trends. This advanced tool can help you figure out why your Shopify competitors are ranking as high as they are in search results so you can improve your shop and outrank them.
Because ecommerce traffic depends on organic search traffic for competitive keywords and link building, it makes sense to monitor your competitors' performance to rank well in search results. It also helps to mimic those strategies on your site to increase your rankings, drive more organic traffic to your site, and, of course, boost my overall sales. With Ahrefs, you can enter your competitor’s URL and see:
  • Which keywords they’re ranking for?
  • How many search results include those keywords?
  • The ranking position of each keyword.
  • How much traffic is visiting your competitor?
  • Their PPC ad budget.
  • Want to know who is linking to my competitors?
Ahrefs can tell me that, too. Here’s how to find a competitor's ranked pages. Here’s how to see where your competitors get their best backlinks:
  • You can see each Teespring page backlinked to the sites on the left.
  • Each site’s domain rating (DR) and URL rating (UR) are also displayed. The higher the rating, the better.
  • The key to knowing this information is to see who is linking to my competitors so I can reach out to them to build a relationship and hopefully get them to link to me instead.

Spy on Competitors’ Facebook Ads with Fadfeed

Suppose my Shopify shop relies heavily on Facebook traffic. If I sell anything using the Facebook platform or if my competitors often advertise on Facebook, FadFeed is the tool for me.
This free-to-use Chrome extension removes all your friends and family's feed items on Facebook, leaving you nothing but ads to study. Check out my competition’s ad strategies, look at their online shops to see what they’re doing there, and mimic what you feel are effective techniques. FadFeed is excellent as you can get ideas of advertisers targeting me. You need to know the company that I want to spy on in their ads and utilize info and ads on Facebook.

Panjiva for Tracking Your Competitors’ Suppliers

If you want to know about the suppliers of your Shopify competition, you should look at Panjiva. This subscription-based website has import and export details on commercial shipments worldwide using customs agency data. It also keeps international trade data 100% transparent and provides insight into global trading. You can use Panjiva’s compilation of data in many ways:

Moz developed the Domain Authority (DA) metric. Using an exclusive algorithm, Moz ranks domains on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the highest score. Using linking root domains (unique domains linking to your domain) and the number of total links, Moz assigns a DA score and predicts how well your website will rank in search engine results.
To use the Link Explorer tool, enter your competitor's URL. Check out the results according to Moz: The results reveal data metrics like:
  • Domain Authority: The domain's ranking potential is based on Moz’s algorithm.
  • Linking Domains: The number of unique external linking domains.
  • Inbound Links: The number of unique pages linking to a target.
  • Ranking Keywords: Number of keywords for which this site ranks within the top 50 positions on Google U.S.
  • Link Data: All links, follow links, linking domains, follow linking domains, top pages.
  • Discovered and Lost Linking Domains: Linking domains discovered or lost from Moz’s index over the past 60 days.
Researching how your competition’s domain authority stacks up against you shows you who the real competition is.
  • Are your domain authorities similar?
  • Is your domain authority much higher than you thought was a major competitor?
  • Is your competitor outranking me big time when it comes to domain authority?
Knowing the answers to these questions will help me decide how much time and effort you should devote to link-building.

Facebook Info And Ads: A Window Into Your Competitor’s Facebook Strategy

Facebook recently added a new Info and Ads section enabling you to see all active ads that a particular Page is running. To be more transparent about the ads Facebook allows Pages to run, Facebook now shows the following data:
  • All ads run on Facebook’s advertising platform (including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and their partner network).
  • The date the page was created.
  • Historical changes to the page name.
  • Primary country location of people who manage the page and how many people in that country currently manage the page.
To see this information, click Info and Ads to your competitor’s Facebook page. You can get creative ideas for your ads, see what your competitor thinks is worth paying for on Facebook, and even see where each ad links. Use these strategies in your Facebook advertising to start pulling your competitors’ audience away from them and toward you.

Reverse Image Search to Gain Insights on Competitors

Backlink research is a great way to learn about my competition. But that’s what everyone is doing, right? You have to break the mold and do something different. That’s where reverse image searches come in handy. Find your competitor's logo online.
  • Go to their website, save the image, or find the logo on Google Image Search.
  • You’ll want to search for the image you found. Just click the camera icon in Google.
  • Upload the image you want to search using the search bar.
  • Scroll through the results and see which ones can help your research.
  • You can include the word “product” to filter for more relevant results.
The key is to find websites with high domain authority that I can contribute to (and get a link for my site). You might find new platforms for selling my products, new events to exhibit at, new partners, and new channels to try, all of which will help me attract customers from my competitors.
You can also reverse image search pictures of best-selling products to see who’s selling them, their prices, what platform they use, etc. We’re not saying to base your backlink research on this strategy alone, but it’s a helpful way of coming up with other results my competition doesn't know about.

Is a Shopify Store Revenue Checker Right for Your Business?

Whether you're a solopreneur or a large corporation, keeping an eye on your competition is suitable for your business and will help your business grow. How? Because competition is healthy, it drives innovation and encourages you to strive for excellence in your product and customer service. You don’t need to spy but to analyze what your competition is doing.
Here’s 11 reasons why you should do a competitor analysis for your business growth.

1. A Competitor Analysis Helps You Understand Your Own Business

Understanding your competitors helps you better understand your business. By understanding your competitor’s strengths and weaknesses, you know what works and doesn’t, how to make better decisions, and how to avoid mistakes. This can provide inspiration and opportunity. As a result, you also learn your business's strengths and weaknesses.

2. Grow Your Industry Knowledge for Business Growth

A competitor analysis will help you grow your industry knowledge, which you can share. You become an expert and an authority that you can use to build trust with your customers. You can also use this knowledge to share with my staff, which helps build their learning and appreciation for your business.

3. Identify Gaps In The Market That Could Benefit Your Business

Competitor analysis helps you understand and identify gaps in the market that could be in a specific geographic location, product offerings, pricing, or selling to a particular target market. For example, a competitor may target younger generations, whereas none of your competitors are tweaking the product to target an older demographic. Understanding gaps is critical if you are a start-up or if you want to develop a new product offer.

4. Define Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

A competitor analysis identifies your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) by analyzing and assessing your competitors (and myself), I can identify what is different about what I offer vs what my competition offers. It answers the customer's question, “Why should I buy from you rather than your competition?” What makes ME different is key to business growth.

5. Learn From Your Competitors, Both Big And Small

Understanding your competition extends beyond businesses of similar size to mine. If your business objectives are to grow, you may want to observe larger competitors or competitors in external markets to emulate their wins or avoid costly errors.
You can identify opportunities for growth and areas of internal or external development. This works for smaller businesses you think are too small to be a threat. You may want to keep an eye on businesses smaller than yours as they want to climb the same tree to pick the fruit you are after.

6. Structure My Marketing Using Competitor Insights

Do you know what keywords or marketing channels your competitors are using? By understanding where the competition is spending, you can appreciate their marketing cost and how much they spend to acquire new customers. This can assist your own marketing and resource planning.
For example, you can determine whether you should directly compete or use more affordable keyword alternatives. You may identify a marketing channel gap, enabling me to target a different market using different marketing channels in a unique, creative way.

7. Learn What Not To Do

Besides helping you understand your competitors' strengths and weaknesses, competitor analysis teaches you what not to do. For example, you did a competitor analysis for a residential builder. Google's customer reviews show that this competitor received several poor ratings and negative feedback.
The competitor should have taken their customer offline to discuss and rectify the problem instead of having a very public tit-for-tat debate about what was correct/not correct with the build and who was to blame. The arguing can create negative assumptions about trust and transparency.

8. Prepare For Changes In The Competitive Environment

You may unearth a new competitor plan or strategy with further competitor analysis like:
  • News stories of expansion
  • Location changes
  • Staff recruitment
  • Redevelopment, etc.
This will aid you in preparing your marketing plan to offset any of their marketing tactics.
A thorough competitor analysis can identify industry trends. It is important to understand where your competition and industry are heading. Look at the Threats and Opportunities that can present themselves and what you (and your competitors) are doing about these trends. You will be considered forward-thinking and agile, a market leader and an authority rather than an industry laggard.

10. Save Time And Money

A competitor analysis can provide cost savings. If I am looking at penetrating a new market, doing a competitor analysis is essential. It provides a wealth of key data as to how crowded the market is, the market size and potential for profit or loss. Ultimately saving me time and money.

11. Detailed Competitor Analysis Provide Valuable Customer Insights

Going a step further, a very detailed competitor analysis can include customer feedback and customer research. Doing an online survey or undertaking focus groups of your competition’s direct customers is possible.
You can compare the most loyal and steadfast customers to the more disloyal customers and address a range of questions about:
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Product offering
  • Service levels, etc.
Detailed research can identify consumer trends and changes across brands and industries.
