Why You Should be Selling on the Internet
Best Ecommerce Products
Worldwide e-commerce sales for B2B businesses have steadily risen year over year for the last decade, with the global B2B e-commerce market valued at USD$36 trillion by 2026.
Heavy industry segments such as advanced manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and professional business services drive most of this B2B sales value.
Ecommerce Growth Trends
Global B2C ecommerce revenue is expected to grow to USD$5.5 trillion by 2027 at a steady 14.4% compound annual growth rate. Leading segments for B2C ecommerce in order are:
Consumer electronics
Fashion
Furniture
Toys/hobby
Biohealth pharmaceuticals
Media & Entertainment
Beverages
Food
In 2023, ecommerce marketplaces were the primary source for starting to search for products online worldwide. A survey shows roughly three out of ten online shoppers searched for products through this channel. Browsing in-store ranked second, with 18 percent of respondents, followed by search engines and brand websites, each with 14 percent.
Consumer Behavior Has Shifted Online
While most people believe that selling on the internet is just about the exchange of goods for money, that’s not the only purpose of selling online. Let’s look at some of the other benefits that come with taking your business online.
Diversification: A Safety Net in Uncertain Times
As my mom always told me, “Don’t put your eggs in one basket.” When COVID-19 caused entire countries to shut down, many small business owners had to shutter their businesses — whether temporarily or permanently.
When you do business in more than one place (without the overhead of having more than one physical location), you have a better chance of weathering economic storms.
Meet Customers Where They Want to Buy
87% of shoppers now begin product searches online, so if you have a product, you must have it online. This also goes for services.
Low-Cost, Quick, and Easy Option for Expanding Your Business
Traditionally, expanding business meant finding a better location, a larger building, or opening an additional location. It was an expensive proposition and took years to accomplish.
Today, you can expand your business in just a few hours. And, in some cases, you can set up your online store for free!
Brand Awareness: Get on the Map
An online store lets people find you and become familiar with your business. What’s that saying? “If you want to make sales, you must get in front of the customer.”
A well-branded online store can help you do that and the more times and places a potential customer sees your brand, the more you’ll stay top of mind when it comes time for them to make a purchase. And brand awareness is an essential tool in building your business overall.
Measurable Results: Get Data-Driven Insights
When selling on the internet, it’s easy to see how your marketing efforts are working. Most sales platforms have integrated sales analytics that you can use to see everything from units per transaction and average order value to the taxes you’ve collected.
If you really want to get to the bottom of your sales, you can integrate other platforms and applications to obtain more detailed information.
In its simplest form, ecommerce is an online shop selling tangible physical products delivered to the customer. This includes businesses which are:
Manufacturing their brands (i.e., you have identified a gap in a specific market and have had your product designed and manufactured to fill this gap)
Reselling the products of other brands (i.e., you sell a range of other brands’ products)
Making and selling handcrafted products. (i.e., you handcraft a small run of bespoke products.)
Digital Products and E-Commerce Services Have Grown Significantly
As with physical products, you can also sell digital products or services online. This area has also grown significantly since the pandemic, with more people using ‘online’ meetings instead of in-person. Digital products or services sold online include:
Online coaching and consultancy
Online training courses
Downloads of digital products (such as eBooks, online music, etc.)
Specialist expertise and platforms (such as selling access to online platforms like ‘FreeAgent’ or ‘Moz’).
Bespoke Products and E-Commerce
In the early days of e-commerce, sellers were generally restricted to providing products and services at fixed prices, with short lead times and minimal human involvement in the sales process.
While this is still generally the case, more businesses now use e-commerce to sell bespoke items online. This could be as simple as adding personalization, such as engraving, to an item or even taking commissions for art, rugs, textiles, etc., so businesses can reach a wider audience.
Online Bespoke Orders
They may have a website with standard items and then use digital channels to take a brief for a bespoke item and complete the deposit and outstanding balance online.
It is acceptable to offer goods with a longer lead time as long as the seller is upfront about that (or else you must deliver within 30 days) and commits to a maximum delivery timescale.
Before You Sell Anything Online, Research Is Key
It goes without saying that before you sell anything online, you must put in the time to carry out comprehensive research into your product - evaluate your product idea, carry out competitor research, and crunch your numbers so you have a firm hand on your costs and profit margins.
Top 4 Characteristics of the Best Trending Ecommerce Products in 2024
Best Ecommerce Products
1. Unique or Eye-Catching: The Appeal of Distinctive Products
Unique products are not only interesting for customers; they can also be profitable. Many dropshipping products are bland or generic. A plain white T-shirt is a boring product no one wants to buy.
A T-shirt with a unique graphic or personalized, even in a small way, is far more appealing. Aim for products that have a distinctive feature, are unusual, or are customizable in some way.
2. Difficult to Find: The Importance of Rarity
If the product is unique, people will try to search for it. This means the demand will be high. Many e-commerce store owners will try to introduce the product to their stores. Now, you have to take the lead and start marketing it.
3. Price Is Not Available: The Value of Novelty
Make sure that consumers can’t find the actual price of the product. Most drop shippers buy products from AliExpress and sell them online in their e-commerce stores.
4. Available for a Healthy Markup: The Sweet Spot for Profit Margins
On average, dropshipping products range between $10 & $40. This is because people can easily spend this amount online to buy products. The behavior is called buying on an impulse.
Anything above this price tag makes people skeptical. They start to think, ‘Will they get value from this product?’ or ‘Should they buy it for this price?’ They then compare prices on various e-commerce stores and buy from those with the lowest prices.

All ingredients are ethically sourced
Vegan friendly
You could also produce sample sizes so people can try them first before buying a full-size bottle

Basic weightlifting equipment, such as dumbbells, pull-up bars, etc.

35 Digital Ecommerce Products to Sell Online
Best Ecommerce Products
1. Ebooks
One of the original digital products but one that is still very popular to this day, and there are many different options when it comes to Ebooks, such as:
Fiction: For either adults or children
Non-fiction: Biographies, history etc
Guides: Business, career, or hobby guides
Educational: Study aids, textbooks, etc
Most books that can be printed can also be made into E-Books, but the significant advantage of the digital version is that you don’t need to find a publisher or pay out of your own pocket to have a run of them printed.
Ebook Formats
You can also choose to produce them in different formats, for example, you could create a PDF Ebook that people download and can print off if they wish or you could create it in a format for e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle or for apps for
Phones
Tablets
2. Audiobooks
Some people don’t like reading but still want to consume written content, which is where audiobooks come into play. You can choose to create audio versions of your own work or other people.
If you have a great voice, you can record these yourself, or I can outsource them to a professional voice actor using many online freelancer services.
3. Music
There are many different options for selling music as a digital product. While some artists create music in the hopes of making it big, musicians and producers can produce tracks for many more applications.
Music Licensing
This is because more and more content creators, whether YouTubers, Streamers, or Podcasts, are looking for good-quality music to enhance their content.
When it comes to selling your music, you can do it directly through your own website or license it through platforms that provide royalty-free music that creators pay a one-off or monthly fee to use, and you earn a percentage of this.
4. Stock Video Footage
Videos are similar to music in that you will create stock footage (as opposed to music) that content creators can use for B-roll in their videos.
Stock Footage
These are often short clips and can be made around almost any subject, as creators make videos about everything and anything. Often, there are times when they can’t produce the b-roll themselves, or it’s just not financially viable.
Once again, as with the music, you can choose to sell this via your own site, but to increase the number of purchases of your video footage, it is often best to leverage the user base of an existing platform.
5. Stock Photos
Stock photos can be a great thing to sell online, especially if you are a skilled photographer. I can take photos of anything, as there are content creators who need images of products, scenes, or locations for their videos or blogs.
As with the two options above, I can sell my photography via my own site but contributing my work to platforms with a much larger user base will likely lead to more income for my stock images.
6. Digital Art
People love art, and we can now use art in many different ways in our lives, which is why it can be a great digital product to sell as it can be downloaded and printed off or used as a background for devices such as phones, laptops or tablets. There are many different types of art I can sell, including:
Photography Digital versions of paintings or drawings
Digitally created art
I can also expand the sale of art beyond digital, incorporating print-on-demand so customers can choose a digital version, order a printed one, or both.
7. Coloring Books
Many people think of coloring as a children’s activity, but in an increasingly stressed world, more and more people are turning to coloring as a relaxing way to relieve stress.
This is where the opportunities lie as a digital product. To sell coloring books, I can create my designs or turn existing pieces of art or drawings into outlines that people can color in. As it is a digital product, they can buy it and print it off within a couple of minutes rather than having to go to the store or waiting for a physical copy to be delivered.
8. Patterns
Crafts are big business, and in order for people to make finished pieces for things like:
Knitting
Sewing
Crochet
They need patterns to work from, and if you know how to make these or can find someone who can, then you could be on to a winner. This is especially true if you can make patterns for different niches and skill sets, as it will be easier to reach your target audience.
9. 3D Printer/CAD Files
3d printing and CAD design are becoming increasingly popular as 3d printing becomes more mainstream and cost-effective for businesses and hobbyists. Still, many people don’t have the time, knowledge, or software to design their prints.
Because of this, they are prepared to pay for them and there are many markets for CAD files, including:
Miniatures
Jewelry design
Replacement parts
There are actually too many niches to list, ranging from large to small, specialized audiences, but there is plenty of opportunity in the 3D printing world.
11. Invitations
Whether it is a birthday party, wedding, or any other kind of event to which the hosts are going to invite people, they will need invitations. Traditional printed ones can be pretty pricey and might only offer a few designs, which isn’t a problem when I am creating digital versions.
There are a couple of ways I can offer invitations:
Customizable templates: This is where I create a design template and the customer can then go in and edit it for their specific needs
Custom Designed: his is where I work with the client to offer a completely custom-designed invitation
Digital Downloads
The customer can then download these and either print them off so that a physical copy is sent or they can send a digital copy via email, I could also offer a printing service if I wanted at an additional cost.
12. Personalized Gift Cards & Tags
When it comes to the holidays or special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, or weddings, many people will send a card and a gift with a tag. While they could go to the store and buy a generic off-the-shelf version, many prefer to send something more personal.
Personalized Gifts
Selling personalized gift cards and tags can be a good opportunity. I can create templates that customers can customize once they have purchased the product. They can then download and print the cards themselves, or I could offer a printing service for this.
Either way, the customer can send a personalized gift card or tag to their friends or family that is a bit more special!
13. Recipe Cards
People love to cook, and many people love to create their own unique dishes, which they may want to share with family and friends. However, a scrap piece of paper not only looks a bit rubbish but can also easily get lost, which is why many enthusiastic cooks like to record their creations using proper recipe cards.
While they could buy a generic design, I could offer a personalized template so that they have their own range of recipe cards. It might be worth recommending that they laminate their cards so they don’t get damaged by greasy fingers.
14. Calendars & Planners
We all live busy lives, and keeping track of everything can be a challenge! This is why many people like to use calendars to plan out their months and year and planners to plan their days and week as this helps them manage their professional and personal lives but they need to buy one that fits with their lifestyle, so I could offer:
Printable Ones: this is for the people who like to write things down in order to keep track
Digital Ones: other people prefer to manage their schedule using their phone or laptop, so I could create a digital calendar/planner that can be easily edited and updated
Either way, there are plenty of options for calendars and planners, I could create some that are tailored to some niches to increase the chance of sales.
15. Document Templates
Everybody needs documents for something or other, such as:
Letter templates
Resume templates
Website documents (privacy policies, T&C, etc)
Sales receipts
The list is nearly endless but people need these documents, and if I can create templates for these that can be easily customized to fit the needs of the customers, then I could be on to a winner. I could also offer a customization service such as writing resumes to help people get a job or a better job, if I were a lawyer, I could create templates for legal documents and make sure they are correct before being used. There are plenty of options for document templates, and focusing on a single niche can be a great way to get started.
16. Online Courses
One type of digital product that has the potential to be very profitable is an online course, and e-learning is a niche that is likely to see continued growth in the future as more and more people look to learn new skills in the comfort of their own home and at their own pace. When it comes to the type of course you can create, there are many many opportunities, including:
Courses around professional skills
Hobby-based courses
Short courses (less than 2/3 hours) that cover a single subject
Long-form courses that cover a wider range of subjects
You can also choose to run the course in a way that students pay a one-off fee to be able to take your course or as part of a monthly subscription. When it comes to selling online courses, you can do it through your website using a platform designed for online courses or through a course marketplace such as Udemy or Skillshare.
17. Software
As the world becomes more digital, the need for software continues to increase and there are always gaps in the market and if I can nail this, then I can build myself a very successful business. When it comes to the type of software that I can create, there are many options, such as the examples below:
Ecommerce Platforms (Shopify, Bigcommerce etc)
Website Builders (Wix, Squarespace, etc)
Email Marketing (MailChimp, Omnisend, etc)
Design Tools (Canva, Adobe Express, etc)
There are too many to list, and some very niche-specific software options are out there. Unlike some of the other software options we will discuss below, these are all standalone, meaning they aren’t reliant on different platforms to operate.
18. Software Extensions
If I don’t want to create my piece of software from scratch, then I can create extensions/plugins/apps for existing software, such as:
Photoshop Rhino (CAD Software)
Logic Pro (Recording software for Mac)
Web browsers (Chrome, Edge etc)
These can sometimes be easier to get sales for as there is an existing userbase for that software, and if my extension can help solve a problem or pain point that people have when using it, I could be on to being a winner. It can be helpful if I am an existing user of the software as I will have a better understanding of how it works. I will likely be involved with the community, which can make it easier to find common issues that people are having.
19. WordPress Plugins
WordPress is the world’s most popular website builder (it currently powers 43% of all the websites in the world!), and part of the popularity is that third-party developers can create plugins that allow you to create all different types of sites, including:
Ecommerce
Websites
Blogs
Business Sites
Membership Sites
Even though thousands of plugins are available, there are still many opportunities for new plugins, whether they are new features, integrations, or better versions of existing plugins.
To create a plugin, you will either need to know how to code yourself or employ the services of a developer to help you create it. When it comes to making money from it, I can make it a paid option, but creating a free plugin with limited features that is available through the WordPress plugin library will help me attract more users who are prepared to pay for all the features. Most paid WordPress plugins are billed annually, or you can get a lifetime license.
20. Shopify Apps
Shopify is one of the most popular ecommerce platforms in the world (it powers over 1 million online stores) and is one of the few hosted platforms that allows third-party developers to create apps and even though there are thousands of apps on the Shopify app store, there are still plenty of opportunities. This is because businesses are looking for additional features, functionality or integrations with third-party platforms as it can help them improve their business and are willing to pay for it.
The big difference between Shopify apps and WordPress plugins is that Shopify apps are billed every month, meaning that I get monthly recurring revenue from customers using the paid-for version of my app.
21. Website Themes
Everyone has a website these days and every website owner wants their site to look good and load quickly and to do this, they are going to need a template for their site. Many platforms allow third-party developers to create themes and templates, with some of the popular options being:
WordPress
Shopify
Wix
When it comes to selling themes, I can either do this via my own website, online theme marketplaces or official marketplaces such as the Shopify theme store and depending on the platform, these may be one-off sales or recurring annual sales. I could also offer custom themes that are built specifically for a client’s site and these generally cost more than off-the-shelf themes.
22. Website Templates
Website templates are slightly different to themes as they are basically layouts for website builders such as Wix or Squarespace and will include things like:
Homepage layouts
Site page layouts (about, contact etc)
Color presets
Font selections
People can upload these to their site and customize them to fit their branding and this can make the process of setting up a website for the user as they don’t have to go through the process of setting up the pages etc themselves. I can also niche these templates down to target specific audiences such as:
Content creators
Bloggers
Ppodcasters
People looking for a portfolio site
This would be great if I had an eye for design and also knew how to optimize layouts for conversions.
23. Social Media Design Templates
There are many different design elements when it comes to social media accounts, including:
Logos
Cover
Art
Post
Templates
Knowing the correct sizes and dimensions for all of these across all social media platforms is a job within itself. That is why business and marketing agencies are prepared to pay for templates for these different things as it saves them time. I can create editable templates that can be purchased and customized by the customer or I could offer to create custom ones, which can save the customer time and for some businesses, that’s more important.
24. YouTube Channel Art & Graphics
YouTube is Big Business, and many creators and channels want the visuals for their channels to be as good as possible, and they are prepared to pay for them:
Channel art: banners, logos, etc.
Intros Outs: I could offer pre-made templates that the customer could customize
Bespoke design service means the customer gets a truly unique piece of channel art.
25. Virtual event
An out-there idea could be to create a virtual event, which has become more popular since the pandemic as it stops people from traveling and opens it up to many more people who might not be able to travel or attend otherwise. To make a virtual event a success, I would need to:
Focus on a niche
Get a list of speakers or workshops that people can watch
Get people to sponsor the event
Have a selection of offers for the attendees.
This provides value to the people who are attending, and if their first one is good, they will be more likely to come back for a second one. I can also create some FOMO around my event by limiting the number of places.
26. Virtual Assistant
Business owners are busy people and as their business grows, they suddenly find that they have less and less time to organize and manage their own lives and that is where virtual assistants can be beneficial as the client simply tells you what they need doing and I organize the rest, this could be things like:
Booking flights & travel arrangements
Arranging meetings & appointments
Replying to emails
In most cases, it’s the mundane everyday things that can take up a lot of time that the client could be spending doing something far more productive, and they are willing to pay people to do this, so if I am good at organizing, then this could be for me.
27. Accounting or Bookkeeping
Even though accounting programs allow people to do it themselves, the time and effort required to manage their accounts means that they would prefer to outsource this to a professional. A professional may be able to offer some advice or guidance on how they could manage their money better.
It also gives the client piece of mind knowing that their accounts are in order and any filings/submissions are done at the right time, which for many is worth the cost of outsourcing it.
28. Social Media Management
Having a presence on social media is a must for any online business and should be an integral part of their marketing strategy. Still, many online business owners aren’t that great at getting the most from their social media accounts and if you know how to grow an audience or generate sales via social media, then people will pay for this. I could choose to specialize in:
Organic Growth
Followers, interaction, reach etc
Paid Ads: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc One Platform
Facebook, YouTube, Linkedin etc In some cases being a specialist in one aspect of one platform, such as generating sales through Facebook Ads, can help me get clients rather than trying to do everything on everything as some business owners know which platforms are best for them, they just don’t know how best to run the account.
29. SEO Services
SEO can be a great long-term marketing strategy, but many people don’t know how to do it or even know how to get started with SEO but if I do and have a proven track record in ranking sites, then I can sell these services to businesses. I could choose to offer:
A fully-fledged service
Be a consultant offering advice and guidance
Offer a specialist service (link building, content writing, etc)
Depending on the type of service I offer, I could work directly for the end client or provide services to agencies or consultants.
30. Website Design
Even though websites are getting easier to make, many people still prefer to outsource the process as it can be more cost-effective and less stressful. To do this effectively, it is best to focus on one platform that I will use to build websites, and this could be:
WordPress
Shopify
Wix
Opencart
I could also specialize in one segment of the market, such as bloggers, portfolios, or e-commerce sites. This would help me build up my own portfolio of existing clients, which would make it easier to find new clients within that niche.
31. Video Editing
Many content creators love making videos but aren’t as fond of the editing process. It is usually one of the first things that a content creator will outsource as it frees them up to spend time working on the things they enjoy doing. I could offer video editing services for:
YouTube
TikTok
Instagram
Course Creators
To be successful at doing this, I need to understand the style of the channel, as all content creators and businesses have their unique style. I will also need to create a portfolio of work I have done so that potential clients can see how good my work is.
32. YouTube Thumbnail Design
Another YouTube-related digital product idea is designing video thumbnails, as these can sometimes be the difference between getting a click or not, and many content creators struggle with this.
This would lead to ongoing work as I would be required to make thumbnails for every video that the YouTuber makes, which can be multiples a week for some or once every week or two for others. I would need to understand the content/tone of the video to make a thumbnail that would work.
33. Copywriting
Good quality copy is essential for websites, whether it is copy for:
Product pages
Landing pages
Blog posts
Many business owners lack the skill to create high-quality copy that converts traffic into paying customers. They are prepared to outsource this as it can not only save them time but also improve their ROI.
34. Consulting
There are many times when business owners need advice around a certain aspect of their business, and there are many reasons why they need to seek the help of an expert and these include:
Marketing growth taking on staff/HR
Area of expertise when it comes to business
I can also become a consultant in areas outside of business, including Legal, Medical, and IT.
35. Teaching
Teaching used to be confined to the classroom, but that is no longer the case and many subjects are now taught solely online which opens up the opportunity for subjects outside of normal education. There are also a few benefits to teaching online, including:
A larger pool of potential students
Can be done from the comfort of your home or office
More flexible
Can choose to do 1-to-1 teaching sessions or small groups
Every product sold online solves a problem. Your first step in the product research process is to find a problem, and there are multiple ways to go about this:
Look at yourself: Are there any gaps in the market around your profession, interests, or hobbies?
Friends, family, and communities: Look at your wider circle to see if they are having problems solving a problem. This can include online communities such as Facebook Groups and Reddit.
Trends: Monitor upcoming trends to identify opportunities. Tools like Google Trends and Trend Hunter can help.
One thing I would recommend is selling products in a niche that you know about and are interested in, as it makes the research process a lot easier. This is a common trait among founders of successful ecommerce businesses.
For example, Gymshark founder Ben Francis was passionate about fitness. This, combined with his entrepreneurial drive, led him to build the fastest-growing gym wear brand of the past decade.
Underlying Motivations Behind Consumer Purchases
There is a step beyond just solving a problem: identifying what drives people to buy that product. It falls into one of two categories:
1. Things People Need
These are products that people buy because they need to solve a specific problem.
Tools
Cleaning products
Certain types of clothing
Protective equipment.
2. Things People Want
These products satisfy a desire because no one needs them, but they want them. Examples include:
Jewelry and luxury watches
Majority of beauty products
Fashion and accessories
Luxury foods (chocolate, etc.)
Once you have found a problem to solve, move on to step two.
2. Research the Market and Demand
Next up is researching the market because you want to know:
Who your competition will be?
How much demand there is for that product.
The first one is pretty simple, as a few simple Google searches will give you a good idea of who is selling the same/similar products and how well they are positioned in the market. Look for information on:
How well do they rank in organic search.
How big the company is. (The bigger they are, the larger their marketing budget.)
How good the company is. (Check out customer reviews of the company and products.)
How big their online presence is? (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
Doing this for multiple competitors will give you a good idea of how easy/difficult it will be to get your product in front of your target audience.
Assessing Market Demand
Once you have checked out the competition, it is time to start seeing if there is any demand for the product and how big that demand might be. This is the more challenging part and takes some effort, but it can include:
Using keyword research tools like Shophunter.io, Google Keyword Planner, Semrush, or Answer The Public.
Asking and posting polls in community groups.
Seeing if people are searching for and viewing content on social media.
Doing this will give you a good idea of the demand for your potential products. Once you are happy that there is enough demand and think there are opportunities against your competition, it is time to move on to step three.
3. Is It Profitable to Sell?
I can’t stress this point enough. If you are going to sell products online, it has to be profitable! If it isn’t, you will be wasting a lot of hard work.
When it comes to figuring out profitability, you need to look at two things:
1. Profit Per Product
The first profit calculation is on each product sale. For this, you will need:
Sale Price
Cost Price
Sale Costs (payment gateway fees, shipping, and packaging costs)
Then it is a simple formula of Sale Price – Cost Price – Sale Costs = Net Profit Per Product.
2. Business Profit
The following profit calculations look at the business as a whole. You want to build a profitable business, and for this, you will need:
Projected Sales (be realistic)
Fixed Costs (rent, rates, etc.)
Variable Costs (utilities, business supplies, etc.)
You then calculate whether you have the potential to build a profitable business. Don’t forget about paying yourself!
Assessing the Profit Potential of Your Product Idea
Some of this may include guestimates, and for sales volume, it is always best to err on the side of caution and go with your lowest potential sales number. But you still need to have a basic idea of whether this has the potential to be a profitable venture or not.
Logistics and Practicality of Selling Your Products Online
One other thing that you should consider is logistics, such as how easy it is to store, move, and ship your products (if you are looking to sell physical products). In some cases, certain types of products just aren’t practical to sell online.
Defining Your Product Niche and Target Market
Once you have done your product research, you will have a basic idea about the products you will sell and the niche you will operate in.

What Options Do I Have for Selling Online?
Best Ecommerce Products
Selling on another platform helps you get started with ecommerce. Some sellers make a start (or indeed run their entire business) without even having their ecommerce store. Instead, they have a presence on another online platform. This is because selling through another platform can give businesses access to the platform's existing audience, the large numbers of people who are already actively shopping in that marketplace and looking to make purchases.
Businesses can also benefit from the other platform's infrastructure, such as managing payments and returns and tracking orders and templates for listing products. These platforms include:
Social media marketplaces: Gumtree, Facebook marketplace and Instagram marketplace, which often suits businesses who sell almost entirely through social media, or for very small businesses with only a few items to sell.
Online marketplaces: Etsy, Not on the High Street, eBay, and Amazon. These online marketplaces boast substantial traffic volumes and sophisticated partner-selling infrastructure.
In this introduction to online marketplaces, learn more about them and whether they are right for your business.
Build Your Ecommerce Website
Building your ecommerce website helps you get started with ecommerce. Depending on your business model and audience, online marketplaces may not fit your business. While online marketplaces have vast volumes of traffic to their websites, they also can have huge amounts of sellers, all competing on the same thing.
The cost of selling or infrastructure restrictions may not fit with your business. In this case, you may opt to create your online store.
Web builder platforms: These include Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, and Weebo. If you don’t have a lot of design or technical experience,website-buildingg platforms can often be the ideal solution to help you design and build your own online store.
Custom-built website: Some businesses, particularly large ecommerce shops, big brands, or those with complex offerings may find that they require the flexibility and scope of their custom-built online shop and will need to employ a specialist web design and build agency to support this.
Combine Online Selling with Fulfillment Options for Ecommerce Success
If you are selling tangible products, fulfillment is a key element of your ecommerce business - it places your products in your customers’ hands. There are many things to consider, including how and where you store your products, inventory management, shipping options and costs, and product packaging. Some things to consider are highlighted below. You have two main options. You can either:
Fulfill Orders Yourself
Generally, a popular option for new businesses, small businesses, businesses with unique packaging requirements, or those with low cash flow and tight margins is for you or your team to store, pack, and send out products yourself.
Use a Third-party Fulfilment Partner
If your business is growing or if you are constrained by space or time, using a third-party logistics partner to manage your warehousing, inventory and fulfilment can be a viable option. There are a number of companies offering this service, and if you sell on Amazon you can use their Fulfilled By Amazon service.
